Friendly natives are guiding the Houston oil man throughout
their area of operations in places like The Texas Sports
Hall of Fame and a restaurant that is a favorite of lodges,
churches, sports teams, clubs and civic organizations.
Bill Flores and Chuck Wilson made it official bright and
early Tuesday morning at George's Restaurant and Catering.
Appearing in the heart of Baylor country at the venerable
and popular restaurant and catering service which has long
serviced all sorts of Waco events for the local
establishment, they told the world they're working together
to put Mr. Flores in Chet Edwards' District 17 House of
Representatives seat come November.
A true hero of the war on terror, Mr. Wilson is a native of
the Gholson Road area on the banks of the Brazos River, a
CIA station chief who helped capture the international
terrorist Carlos the Jackal where he was hiding in The
Sudan.
He told a crowd of about 25 faithful and three television
news crews, print reporters and curious onlookers about Bill
Flores' ranching origins near the Panhandle town of
Stratford.
"This is a man who had to break the ice on his way to school
in the mornings on the watering troughs so the cattle could
drink," he said.
Many years later, Mr. Flores has retired as CEO of a Houston
energy company that acquired hundreds of millions of dollars
in petroleum leases offshore in Louisiana and Texas.
"Most of you have never met Bill Flores, but you know him."
Mr. Wilson paused for a moment and said, with true emotion,
"The American dream has somehow become an impediment...It is
a challenge to what it means to be free."
He told the crowd that "Chet Edwards has faltered."
Mr. Flores emphasized that his program consists of three key
components.
Creation of jobs is the top priority.
"We've got to get people comfortable enough to start hiring
people."
There must be a seriously successful effort to curb deficit
spending to a point where the nation can turn the corner on
a runaway national debt. There must be true progress made
on paying down that debt.
"If we have a disruption in our Treasury auctions over the
next few years, the economic devastation will be
overwhelming." He explained that about one-third of the
bulk of debt comes to maturity each year. If creditors
cannot see their way clear to buying treasury securities,
the economy will falter and quite possibly never fully
recover.
The only solution he can see is to curb runaway Federal
spending.
"We have these huge problems and what do they do? They
spend all their time trying to solve health care problems."
He called for a tax credit for individuals and couples
similar to the one offered to small businesses for health
care expenses.
Tort reform is a high priority. It all leads back to a
stimulation of the economy by making it safe for business
men and women to hire workers to take care of their
companies' needs for help getting the job done.
Without some give in these areas, it won't happen, according
to Bill Flores.
Asked by a television reporter about the role Chuck Wilson
will play in his campaign, he replied, "I think Chuck
Wilson's support is going to be immeasurably valuable to
us...Chuck Wilson, Dave McIntyre and me," he recalled of the
primary campaign in which he and Rob Curnock edged out Mr.
Wilson and Dr. McIntyre, "our policies were all about the
same." Dr. McIntyre has reserved his support for a
Republican candidate until after the runoff election is
completed.
In multiple campaign appearances throughout McLennan County
over the past few days, he is clearly looking to improve on
the good performance he already turned in the primary race
in which he got 5,376 votes in comparison to Mr. Curnock's
tally of 6,131. This is in comparison to a whopping 6,644
votes in his home territory of Brazos County in comparison
to 2,891 votes for Mr. Curnock.
Mr. Flores pointed to various persons in the throng who
showed up for the event, indicating a Waco Marine Corps
retiree, Ken Bates, of the Marines' aviation wing.
"We know we can bring America back to itself," he concluded.
