Demos Tap John Cullar To Oppose Birdwell In SD 22

BULLETIN:

In a meeting late Thursday night, County Democratic Chairmen
from the 10 counties that make up Senatorial District 22
nominated Waco attorney and former McLennan County
Democratic Chairman John Cullar to challenge Senator Brian
Birdwell in the Nov. 2 election as State Senator.

He is a principal partner in the law firm of Cullar &
McLeod, LLP, and enjoys an extensive federal practice in
corporate, civil rights and criminal litigation.

Mr. Cullar got the nod from the chairmen to become the
Democratic candidate after former State Senator Kip Averitt
resigned as the Republican nominee for the General Election.
Mr. Averitt won the primary contest running unopposed in
March, though he had vowed he would not run if voters chose
to elect him.

Mr. Averitt is a diabetic and suffers from heart disease.

Lt. Col. Brian Birdwell won a run-off election opposed by
former State Senator David Sibley, an Austin lobbyist and
the former Mayor of Waco who represented numerous power
companies, insurance carriers, trial lawyers and trade
associations before legislative committees.

Thus, the culmination of what many knowledgeable political
observers have termed the strangest series of legislative
primary and nominating contests on record in a state noted
for many bizarre twists and turns on the path to the domed
city of Ostentatious in the People's Republic of Travis
County.
