When two million people converged on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol in March to protest passage of ObamaCare, they were doing what the First Amendment guarantees - peacefully assembling to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
But in a new book published this week, Dick Armey and Matt Kibbe of Freedomworks declared this movement represents much more in the American political spectrum.
“The movement is not seeking a junior partnership with the Republican Party. It is aiming for a hostile takeover.”
That famous rant from the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange by MSNBC commentator Rick Santelli, in which he called for a new tea party of Americans taking direct action against taxation without true representation, has touched off much more than a wave of protest over dissatisfaction with the status quo.
It's a sea change that is sweeping all former conservative values before it, according to the new book.
Mr. Armey, an ultra conservative Republican from Irving, is the former Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives during the tenure of Newt Gingrich as Speaker. He was an active participant with John Boehner (R-OH), present Minority Leader, in drafting that once-famous “Contract With America.”
“Give Us Liberty: A Tea Party Manifesto,” Harper-Collins, is in book stores today.
