Conservative Dallas daily says “The truth doesn't get in Flores' way.
A poll released today shows Congressman Chet Edwards trailing Republican Bill Flores by only 4 points.
In a quiz prepared by long-time pollster, Bennett, Petts & Normington, respondents indicated that Flores' positions on such issues as privatizing veterans health care, the 10-term Representative has cut the lead by more than half the 10 points shown in a survey conducted Sept. 13-14.
As of Oct. 4-5, a nearly equal share of a random sample indicated they would vote for Chet Edwards if the election were held today.
“In a district where Republicans outnumber Democrats by a margin of two to one, Chet Edwards is in a neck and neck race with his opponent,” the polling organization stated in a memo, noting their calculations allow for a plus or minus margin of error of 4.9%.
“The Dallas Morning News” gave Mr. Edwards the newspaper's endorsement, citing the endorsements of other conservative organizations such as the Texas Farm Bureau, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the National Rifle Association.
Said the editorial board of the Dallas News, “Flores also has backtracked on whether he considers Edwards a socialist, now saying he doesn't believe that...Calling Edwards a socialist is as silly as calling Ronald Reagan a liberal. Edwards has always been a pro-defense, pro-business Democrat.
“The truth doesn't get in Flores' way.”
The newspaper editorial praised Mr. Edwards' independence from Democratic Congressional leadership.
Reportedly, when invited to appear before the editorial board of the Dallas “News” to pitch his candidacy, Mr. Flores accepted the invitation, then failed to show up because he had a doctor's appointment.
Congressman Edwards, also invited at the same time, kept his appointment and explained his position on vital issues such as energy legislation, tax cuts and health care.
