Tea Party choice promised to create jobs in Buffalo – created only 25 - tops
Only two weeks after an upset victory over a moderate Republican for the nomination for Governor, a Manhattan newspaper is making it hot for Carl Paladino over $3 million in tax breaks he got to create jobs.
Sales of a dozen vacant lots to himself, the creation of a mere 25 jobs in return for what he described as “hundreds of thousands” of dollars in investments, all this and more has surfaced in a New York “Daily News” investigation of a loose cannon who forwarded racist jokes in e-mails, pornographic pictures and sexist comments about women.
Mr. Paladino gleaned only 8 percent of the state convention nomination proxies last summer, yet came from behind to post a blistering win over a former Congressman, Republican Rick P. Lazio, by spending more than $3 million of his own money compared to a $2 million effort by Mr. Lazio.
He now faces Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo, a Democrat who has amassed a $25 million war chest, in the Nov. 2 general election contest.
A top Republican Party official was heard to say following Mr. Lazio's defeat, “We just handed Cuomo the Governorship.”
Mr. Paladino has toured the state with a pit bull named Duke, avowed a personal anger he says he shares with most other New Yorkers toward Albany, and is campaigning on a platform that opposes massive government spending. He is advised by former Richard M. Nixon operative Roger J. Stone, Jr. He is a second generation Italian-American and the son of a former depression-era CCC volunteer.
