ICE Agents Shot On Road To Monterrey - 1 Dead, 1 Wounded

Unknown assailants killed one Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agent and wounded another as they drove from Mexico City to Monterrey Tuesday.

When they stopped at what appeared to be a military checkpoint in San Luis Potosi, gunmen opened fire, according to an ICE statement.

The attack comes after several others on U.S. officials in the past few months. In March, a U.S. employee of the consulate in Juarez, here husband and a Mexican citizen lost their lives in an attack on their car following a children's party.

The consul's office was closed in July after unspecified threats.

ICE was created in 2003 through a merger of the Immigration and Naturalization Service and the U.S. Customs Service. It is responsible for detecting immigration and smuggling crime and detaining suspects.

The two agents who were attacked were assigned to the ICE office at Mexico City.
