In the first referendum delivered by Democratic voters on the Obama presidency, a heavily Jewish 9th District of New York City defeated a Democratic candidate, electing a Republican by a large margin.
In a special election for the seat of disgraced former Rep. Anthony Weiner. Republican Bob Turner defeated Democrat David Weprin after a hotly contested, summer-long race that ignited Democratic fears of a quiet election morphing into a referendum on the party and President Barack Obama, ahead of next year's elections."
Former Democratic Mayor Ed Koch endorsed Mr. Turner during the campaign, saying Mr. Obama is not supportive enough of Israel. Many knowledgeable observers say they feel this signals a problem with Jewish voters in the northeastern U.S.
Mr. Obama carried the 9th District 55 to 45 percent in the 2008 general election.
