An NBC News/Wall St. Journal poll shows that 64% of respondents feel it's a “good idea” to raise taxes on the wealthy and corporations. Only 31% agree it's a “bad idea.”
Their reason is they feel those who make in excess of $1 million per year and the corporations they own should pay their “fair share” of taxes.
Of those polled, 63% favored passage of the Obama jobs bill in the U.S. Senate while only 32% oppose it. A follow-up question included in the poll indicated that the bill would cut payroll taxes, fund new road construction, extend unemployment benefits, and that it would be paid for by increasing taxes on the wealthy.
Asked if they would favor a clean passage of the jobs package, 30% said they favored passage of the jobs package and 22% opposed its passage. Forty-four percent said they have no opinion.
The bill failed by 50 to 49 votes to get the required 60 votes to advance it to the Senate floor for debate and an up or down vote. Two Democrats, Bob Nelson of Nebraska and Jon Tester of Montana, voted with all the Republicans in the Senate to block the jobs bill.
Passage of the law would have imposed a 5.6% income surtax on Americans who report income of $1 million per year or more and caused an increase in corporate income taxes.
The poll allowed for a margin of error of 3.1% in the sample of 1,000 respondents quizzed.
