Drive-by shooter who hurt baby nabbed in W. Waco

'I told you we would hunt you...'

Waco – When Waco officers stopped the driver in the 2100 block of Maple Ave., they arrested him for driving with an invalid license and possession of an unspecified amount of crack cocaine.

It was the end result of “a long and tedious 8 days,” according to Sgt. Scott Holt, who said “I told you we would hunt you, find you and hold you accountable.”

Gunfire split the night-time sky at 2 a.m. on October 10 when a then-unknown assailant fired repeatedly at a house in the 1600 block of North 18th Street where six people slept.

Crime scene investigators reportedly found “at least three bullet holes” in the residence.

Inside, the terrified residents discovered 7-month-old baby Dmar E. Caufield injured by a gunshot wound to his head, his uncle Craig Mays, 38, suffering from a shrapnel wound to his arm.

Samuel Henry, Jr.
Though officials at McLane Children's Hospital, Scott & White, Temple, refuse to give details of the child's condition, they report he is still living following emergency surgery that left him on a respirator.

Officers later served an arrest warrant for aggravated assault and injury to a child on Samuel Henry, Jr., where they jailed him earlier Thursday for the drug charge at the McLennan County lockup.

Officer Holt credited investigators with the Crimes Against Children unit, offering “a special shout out” to Investigator Brent Belcher in helping to identify the accused shooter who left the child so seriously injured as he slept in the pre-dawn hours.
