Al Qaeda attack frees 40 terrorists from Yemeni prison

Mukhalla, Southern Yemen – Dozens of Al Qaeda fighters attacked a prison in this seaside city today, freeing 40 prisoners awaiting trial or previously convicted for terrorism.

According to Radio Free Europe and other news sources, one guard was killed and several wounded when a firefight broke out between militants bearing machine guns and prison guards.

The nation has been in a state of unrest since January when protests against President Ali Abdulla Saleh's regime erupted. He is in Saudi Arabia recovering from wounds he received in a bombing in early June.
