Bearing a certain suddenly ubiquitous square sign in white letters reversed on a field of scarlet that reads “This Vet Is Not For Chet,” the veterans opposing re-election of Rep. Chet Edwards assembled on the corner of Valley Mills and Waco Dr. at 6:30 a.m.
About 15 of them showed up.
Waving their signs, they let the world pass them by while they proudly proclaimed their opposition to the 10-term U.S. Representative who chairs the House Subcommittee on Appropriations for Veterans Affairs, Military Construction and Quality of Military Life.
Their Congressman has the VA's checkbook and they don't like that.
Why?
When asked, they began to talk about the actions of President Barack Obama and House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi – neither of whom are on the ballot in Texas Congressional District 17, where the contest is between Chet Edwards and retired Houston oil executive Bill Flores, who now lives in Bryan.
They had announced their rally would be held between 6:30 and 8:30 a.m., but when The Legendary arrived at 7:30, after the sun had arisen fully and picture taking would be at its best, they were packing their signs up and leaving the Peter Piper Pizza parking lot.
No interview, no story, no picture, no video.
Oh, well, all righty, then.
Adios, amigos.
