Somali pirates set fire to tanker, 1 million barrels of crude

Somewhere in the Indian Ocean – When the 7 pirates stormed the oil tanker Brillante Virtuoso, they opened fire on the 26 crewmen.

Soon, a fire broke out in the crew quarters and on the bridge of the vessel, which is laden with 1 million barrels of crude oil.

The vessel is now drifting, dead in the water.

The Somalian pirates and the crew fled the burning vessel.

Kenyan navy sources say the Filipino crewmen made it safely into the lifeboats and contacted another merchant vessel. The American-registered ship, U.S.S. Philippine Sea is steaming to their rescue.
