House Members Back In D.C. To Fund Teachers' Pay

In the absence of a budget, Speaker Pelosi calls 1-day session

The House of Representatives returns to Washington today for a one-day session to pass a funding measure to pay teachers' salaries.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the special session, breaking a traditional month-long August recess because the chamber has failed to adopt a budget.

When Senators funded the federal contribution to teachers' salaries in a spending bill, the House was forced to either pass a companion bill in approval, or face the prospect of students returning to classrooms later this month with no teachers in charge.
